Ok, there is a local truck for sale for $650 obo. Assuming I can get it for $600, I would still have to pay close to $200 to license and plate it. The truck is a nice 1990 Isuzu pickup 4x2(one of the smaller trucks) and has 200K miles on it. It is also a 4 cylinder which makes gas usage less. I would also need to pick up some liability insurance which would cost in the ballpark of $100~

Or I have my dad's 1992 Chevy Cargo Van, it is paid for and is already plated under his name. It does not currently have insurance on it as all it does is sitting in a parking spot. The Engine was replaced with a V6(V8 formally) and has less than 80K on the engine. Assuming I could get insurance on a van under my dads name it would cost around $110~ to insure per month.

Now the truck would probably get better mileage but the van seems to have a lot more interior room than the truck. The main purpose of the vehicle will to be to get me to college and back(16miles or so 1 way) and to haul furniture and scrap metal.

Which one would you choose? By the way, this will be my first vehicle, lol.

Truck no doubt, costs less and in the end the interior space is probably the same except for the fact that it's interior space in the van (but who really gives a shit about inside or outside anyways).

Less mileage and no upfront costs make the truck a winner.

Van... because on that day when you have to move back from college, and it is pouring out, you will praise whatever is in front of you while you're on your knees, that you got the van.
