I am sure this thread will be moved, but I was not sure if it should go under Motherboards or Hardware or a different section.

I have an nForce MB, and an Iogear external hard drive, but it is transfering atUSB 1 rates.
Any idea why and how to fix it?

I think USB 2.0 support comes with WinXP SP1. Do you have all of your Windows Updates installed?

Did you make sure to install SP1 for Windows before installing the nForce2 drivers? If not, your USB 2.0 ports will only work at 1.1 speeds. You must install SP1 prior to installing the nForce2 chipset drivers.

Are you using the front USB ports? what case is it? I had issues with my chieftec front panel not working at USB2.0 too. I have heard the same of Antec, Chenming, and cheiftec. I'm sure a few others aswell. It is because they are all built in the same factory and used the same faulty front USB pcb. Many others had the same problem and everyone contacted their manufacturer and had the new USB2.0 panel's sent free of charge. I donno if thats what ur problem is but it could be.

Here is the error message (the Mass Storage device it mentions is the external HD connected to the USB port):

The USB MassStorage Device will function at reduced speed. You must add a HI-SPEED USB host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance.

Cables for USB 2. need to be shielded - even from mobo to the front panel or port strap. Lots of cases come with unshielded front-panel cables (even ribbon cable).
.bh.

the USB host controller driver does not seem to be installed for this motherboard. like the other post above stated that you have to have SP1 installed.

Did you try uninstalling the USB stuff in Device Mangler and having Windows detect it again? If not, do try that. And that is also good info from Zepper about the need for compliant cabling.

REMOVE the USB drivers from Device Manager and make sure it updates to USB2.0 drivers.

I wonder if that is it.
Antech case, but I have it plugged into the rear port.
