what would make a computer take 4ever to start

running winxp pro
on a win sbs2k3 domain

all the other computers start up just fine

P4 2.0
512MB RAM
latest AVG
latest Spybot
defragged
cleaned up msconfig

computer boots up fairly quickly but then goes really really slow for about 40 minutes. it takes forever to do anything, like opening a simple spreadsheet

after the first 40 or so minutes, it starts going fast again and stays fast all day long

if i reboot the computer during the day, it reboots quickly and responds quickly, it only goes slow first thing in the morning. i moved the avg daily scan to the nighttime. all the other computers are running the same basic programs and services (they are fed by the server) and still run av in the morning. logging into any other computer at the same time, it still goes speedy.

this makes me think its something on that computer specifically but it seems to be time dependent. any ideas?

It is probably due to the things you have setup for AVG and Spybot to do, plus Windows update and anything else that might be set to do automatically. We keep piling on more and more background chores.

Simple answer... spyware or virus

Check and make sure nothing suspicious is running in the task manager.
Watch how much internet activity there is.

Run a Trend Micro Housecall (free online) scan.
Download Windows Defender (beta 2) and run it.
