What would limit a burner to burn at 1x on a system?

My buddy just got a new DVD burner, installed it, and found that he's limited to burning anything at 1x. Now, this problem existed before, with his old burner. It doesn't matter what program he uses, everything is stuck at 1x.

Where should I even start? I'm not sure a re-format is even feasible, due to the amount of data he has on 1 hard drive.

sorry i cant be more descriptive, but thats about all the info i have to go on.

Could be that the drive is in PIO mode instead of DMA. Also could be garbage media.

PIO..good call. I'll have to look into that.

And it's not the media. I know this for certain.

your friend might want to check out his registry to see if there are any references to 'Star-force'. It's a copy-protection software on games known to cause this slow down on some burners by causing the Windows to step down into PIO mode.

Could it be related to Nvidia IDE drivers (if that's what your friend has)?

Your friend may also want to reinstall the old burner and make sure it's still burning correctly (that way he can narrow down his issue). If it works fine, then he can then concentrate on locating the problem for the new burner (check the bios settings, OS drivers, driver firmware, etc.).

It seems to be stuck in PIO mode, and won't switch to DMA. It's a Dell system.

The old burner was stuck at 1x, and the new one is stuck at 1x.

Delete all items under IDE section in DEVICE MANAGER. Reboot PC and go into BIOS. Make sure all IDE devices are seen and set to AUTO detect. Save and exit. Boot into windows and verify all devices are operating in DMA mode.
