What would happen to the world wide web if/when advertising disappears?

Client side blockers are getting good. What happens when they are so good that everyone uses them, and websites can no longer advertise on their sites, because everyone is blocking the ads?

Websites go out of business? Make money another way?

Discuss.

Possibilities:

More content becomes subscription\pay
Ads become more invasive (requiring looking at an add prior to viewing content)

The internet will survive, but I suspect the quality and quantity of some of its offerings would be diminished.

I recently visited a website following a link from a Dailytech article - forgot which one it was. It popped up a message something to the effect:

"We have detected you are using Adblock Plus. While we understand how intrusive some Internet advertising can be, we have taken great measures to ensure the ads on our website merge well with our design and layout and don't distract from the content. We provide you with great, free content and advertising is how we pay our bills. While you are free to continue browsing our site, we would appreciate it if you added it to your whitelist. Thank you. Click here to proceed."

I guess this would become pretty common on the Net.

I think that are a shit ton of people that still don't use ad blockers due to being stupid. We underestimate the amount of stupids in this world.

Considering all companies websites are used as advertisements... the web would be VERY boring. No microsoft.com, google.com, yahoo.com, etc.

Websites are just ways for companies to hock their wares.

I don't use Adblocking software, it's stupid who cares if it's there just don't click it.

Like Regs said sometimes I just click on AT's to support them(us)

Users smart enough to use effective ad-blocking programs are users who wouldn't click on an ad in the first place.

I honestly do not see this ever happening. Every time a new method to block advertisements is created, some smart guy out there cashes in by getting a bunch of programmers to develop a new way to get around the latest and greatest method.

Here's to hoping it happens anyways though. If it does, then we can simply rely on porn to fund the internet...not that it doesn't already do that.
