What kind of disaster can happen ? This is an AMD K6 chip architecture that I am talking about. Is booting computer without heatsink / fan recommendable at all ?

Tell me your experience :)

Why in the world would do that?

I personally haven't done it and I don't intend to either.

No experience but I would not recommend it,why would you want to boot your PC without the heatsink/fan anyway?

:)

A p2 266 I had lasted over 2 minutes with me holding the actual "core" and then it started getting hot :)
It still ran perfectly afterwards though

Depends on your chip... A K6 will probably boot and run for a few minutes and then crash. A 1.2 ghz T-Bird will burn in under 10 seconds :Q

No, seriously ... this is not for me. I have experience installing dozens of computers and never boot a computer without using heatsink or fan.

However, My buddy booted his AMD K6-2 400Mhz fine, but when it loads into window (about 30 seconds) it will locks up. He doesn't have a heatsink / fan on the poor chip at all.

would you say that the above is the culprit of his problem ?
Would you boot your computer at all without heatsink/fan ? Even for 30 seconds - 1 minute?

(especially if it is AMD chip)

Well, let me know again !

Thanks for the fast response.

Er:

It had a sinksink on it. I took the golden orb off because it didn't fit properly, but have re-seated it after some fiddling. I doubt if heat was the problem. The puppy would boot to the logo screen and hang. It wouldn't shut down. Also, it only takes about 30 secs to boot cold to the logo screen. Anyway, after reinstalling the G.O. it booted fine, then wouldn't find the mouse, then upon reboot wouldn't find the mouse and keyboard, and upon a third reboot wouldn't go past the logo screen again.

So, I gave up. Gave the guy his computer back, he took it home turned it on and it runs just fine.

I'll be blowing my brains out momentarily. :p

Thanks for your help, Er.

burn up, catch on fire, chip pops out of socket due to expansion from the heat.. haven't actually seen it but have heard stories of chips actually popping off the board :) if anyone wants to do it make an .avi or .mpeg!(no idea why one would do this for kicks unless they are made of $$$)

humm i've got an old 486...
someone just needs to supply a video camera

actually i've thought of putting the chip in upside down because i was bored one sunday, but then common sense stepped in,

maybe i'll drink a 24 and go for it..haha

really though what's a 486 worth these days? $20, if that

i have seem a thunderbird start up without the heatsink...
Well in actually it was a slot a with a heatsink attached, unfortunetly when you shined a flashlight inside you could see that the goop which should have been between the cpu and the plate was not there; instead was a gap. I believe it was a oem cpu that tiger direct slapped together with a heatsink and fan, unfortunetly they didn't do it right.
Surprisingly the bad boy would boot to the dos promt, unfortunetly it always lock up during a windows install.
(we didn't realize the problem until about 15 botched attempts to install windows)
conequently the damn thing went back to tiger.

frover2000: I did that about five years ago. The motherboard started smoking and it smelled funny. I got a new motherboard (I still had warranty), put in the same cpu and it worked just fine.

A K6 runs hot - even with extreme cooling. Remove that fan/heatsink and you're talking China Syndrome.
