What would happen if someone hit someone else with their car?

I didn't. But I'm wondering what would happen if someone was to be driving down a road, going the speed limit, obeying traffic laws, but for whatever reason, hit and killed someone in the road, maybe they had a green light but the person decided to cross anyway.

How much jail time

its my understanding in the situation you describe that you wont get charged with a crime.

A friend of mine was driving home on the interstate when she hit a guy on a bicycle crossing the freeway. Turns out he was being chased by the police.
Somehow she didn't kill him, but in either case, they let her go after taking a statement.

Had she actually killed him, I'm sure there would have been a similar response.

That is really only true at intersections and crosswalks.

Pedestrians still have a responsibility to stay out of the way of cars, except at designated crossings.

Wrong. Now, that doesn't mean you can just go out and ram pedestrians at will...but they do have their responsibilities as well.

Cyclists are hit by cars all the time, and the driver is cited for anything, even when clearly at fault. Seriously, got a problem with someone? Kill 'em w/ your car and you have a better chance of "getting out of it" than if you do so with a gun, knife, etc. Car culture FTL!
