What would happen if Intel produced the K8 and AMD produced the P4?

Imagine, Intel would be putting out 90 nm Athlon 64s in high volume against AMD?s 130 nm P4s in relatively low volume. Also, 90 nm S754 Semprons versus 130 nm S478 Celerons.

They?d just kill them. AMD would be out of the desktop CPU business pretty damn quick.

It just goes to show how important the fabrication process is. AMD have the design to kick Intel?s ass, but just can?t implement it quickly enough or in high enough volume.

Hats off to AMD for their design and to Intel for their fabrication capabilities (& for the Pentium M 🙂)

Volume isn't their problem...marketing and the public's preconceived notion that Intel is the best is their problem...

The P4 would be a better chip 🙂

AMD isn't being hurt by inability to produce. Their problem is the facts that:
1. Intel = best in the eyes of many ignoramuses just becuase Intel = Intel
2. AMD doesn't have the best marketing
3. AMD's nomenclature turns off many potential buyers (although Intel is moving that way now so this is going to be less of an issue)
4. The whole megahertz myth.

that's just a stupid question. are you talking about just switching all their fabs or the technology or what?
Well don't answer that cause I don't really care.
BTW AMD isn't hurt by their inablility to produce more processors. true they couldn't make many more if the market was there, but it isn't and their fab is running under capacity

If AMD spent more on their marketing they could very well beat out Intel. There other problem is that Dell, one of the major players in the desktop PC markets is exclusive to Intel. If they were able to swing Dell into offering AMD based systems then we'd be talking.

I'll end up buying both. I always maintain minimum 2 boxes, 1 amd and the other intel.
