What would happen if I put a 24w pump on a 20w fan controller?

I was thinking about using my PWM fan controller to control the speed of a pump. The pump is the MCP655, which claims it's 24w. My fan controller is rated for 20w per channel. So what would happen? This would only matter if I ran the pump at the lowest setting, correct?

I wouldn't.
I say this not for any electrical concerns, I don't know enough about the mechanics of the motor to say if it would do harm or not, my guess is that it would be fine. My questeion is why you would want to? noise? If you mount the 655 on a 1/4' of foam with double sided tape or maybe silicone it will be almost inaudible, the fans make more noise even undervolted.

I don't actually have the pump yet. I'm currently using a 6yr old Eheim 1250. It seems to be vibrating more and more with each passing day, so my plan is to replace it with a MCP655. My question was more for academic reasons, but if the pump is quiet enough even at full speed, then I guess it doesn't matter 😉

Is that a cooking fan controller I smell? 😉

I wouldn't put the pump on the controller. The D5 vario (MCP655) has a speed adjustment on it, just use that. But from reports it isn't that loud when mounted properly. Soft mounting works wonders.

the Variable speed MCP655 costs $15 more 😉

In any case, I'll see how loud it is at full speed, and then considered connecting it to my fan controller.
