What would Happen if Bush nominated Lieberman for the Secretary of Defence?

i know Rummy has been given the "Life appointment" by the president, but this idea has been floated around atleast on the web before. So that is the only reason i bring it up. If Rummy quits or is fired and the president nominates Joe, What happens to the Seat? Who nominates the replacement?

That would never happen, but I believe if it did, the Governor of CT would nominate a replacement, to be approved by the state legislature.

He would never get approved by the Senate.
A better question is what are the voter re-call options in Connecticutt? If Lieberman jumps ship to the Republicans he would lose a re-call election. Then does the Governer a Repub get to choose a new senator or is there a special election?

I think Lieberman would tell Bush to go cram it with walnuts. I'm not sure where people get this idea that Lieberman is some sort of huge conservative, but he's actually quite liberal on issues other than Iraq...and he doesn't like Bush nearly as much as some people seem to think.

I agree, it would never happen. Supposedly Lieberman was offered Sec of State before Powell but he turned it down.

The governor (Jodi Rell) is a moderate, pro-choice Republican. Lieberman says he will caucus with the Dems and vote with them on procedural matters. If Lieberman resigned to take a higher post, this would almost certainly shift the Senate balance back into the GOP column (assuming it does go Democratic, as it presently looks like will be the case). Since Lieberman's first and main priority has always been himself it is possible he would accept an offer from the White House, but with only two years left the offer would have to be amazing attractive for him to do it.

I don't think Lieberman has either the skills or temperment for Secretary of Defense, in any event.

True but a far more important reason . . . who in the halibut would want that friggin' job?! Joe thinks he has a big future (leader in the Senate, VP, possibly top job). Being an elephant pooper scooper has more promise than SoD.

I do agree with the flip side of your premise. Bushistas are such a closed, group-think kind of operation that there's absolutely NO WAY he would allow a nonKool-Aid drinker to be privy. Bush Leaguers are light-years away from Clinton/Cohen.

<Aside> Everytime I see or hear Lieberman's name or face these days, Jon Stewarts' devastating imitation of him floods my mind. <Aside>

That said, anyone who thinks of this as a serious possibility is making a huge mistake that has nothing to do with Lieberman.

Rumsfeld, almost as much as Cheney, is joined at the hip to Bush the Lesser. Remember last prez election when some thought Bush might cut Cheney loose in order to win votes. THAT was never gonna' happen, either.

Rumsfeld, like Cheney, IS Bush the Lesser. You may as well try to get Bush to finally finish his National Guard stint as get that puppet to cut the strings of his creators and animators.
