What would give me the most performence increase in general?

What would give me the most performence increase in general?

A 15000 rpm SCSI HD with a SCSI card or a GF4 ti4200 (may get a GF4 ti4400 or GF4 ti4600 instead if i can afford too) with a Athlon XP 1800 + ?

well unless you do some rreal hD intensiv stuff, i think faster video and CPU will be more noticeable.

Adul ok. So even with the GF4 ti4200 128 mb of ram video card only? I mean i saw on benchmarks where the GF4 ti 4600 could like do jedi 2 barely and the GF4 ti4200 had like 30 fps with medium detail with no faa or whatever it is. Then like at 2x faa on it had 25 fps then at 4x faa it had like 17 fps. Where the GF4 ti 4600 had like for the lowest fps at 4x faa like 37 fps which was playable just about. Near he boarder line i guess maybe. Which video card do you think best to get for right now and the future? Also i went from a voodoo 3 2000 pci video card to a GF2 GTS for $45 but my GF2 GTS still seems sorta too slow in games with pretty many details on at high. i ran it at 800x600 and 1024x768 and it seem alittle choppy. I do only have a duron 800mhz but i think it should be fast enough for my GF2 GTS so i guess upgrading my processor and video card again may help with that problem in RTCW, and this problem where it gets really slow or freezes up just about in Medal of Honor during a part where you are shotting a lot. Like the fps go down to 7 fps or even lower during that part for some reason. I thought the GF2 GTS would be pretty much faster than my voodoo 3 2000 pci. To tell you the truth my voodoo 3 2000 pci video card felt faster but maybe thats because i did not put details too high or something. Not sure.

OK, there is nothing about your rig to start with, so this will be a guess, but the GF4 ti4200 with an XP 1800+, almost any motherboard and memory type, but with 256 meg mimimum size, and an ATA 100 HD (even <cough>5400 rpm), should play almost any game at 1024x768 on high detail. Where are you coming up with your numbers (frame rates) ?????

Well, if it's all just about games, the video card and CPU will do you better.

AnandTech did a sub $200 video benchmark, with a scaling graph of different CPU speeds. Even though it's an Athlon XP at different speeds you'll get the idea of 800 MHz vs. 1.6 GHz. with a same/different video card.

Sub $200 This is just to give you an idea if you stick with your 800 MHz and get the SCSI HDD.

Could i overclock a GF4 ti 4200 128 mb of video ram video card to be as fast as a GF4 ti 4600 without any extra cooling added? Or no ?
Or overclock it like very close to the same performence? Also what brand GF4 should i get? Like whats the best brand to get for 2d, one that has the best cooling, and one not with a loud fan on the video card that i can hear. Also if i did overclock the GF4 ti 4200 to the same speed as the GF4 ti4600 would it have the same features as the GF ti4600 if i would of got that one? Are all the GF4 ti video card series the same just clocked at different speeds or no ? The GF4 ti 4600 has better 3d, 2d, or more extra features with the video quality, etc?

If you get a 4200 you must overclock it.
Check the pictures of the card (@newegg) before you buy, some have better heatsinks on the ram and gpu than others but the 4200 shoud overclock easily to high 4400 speeds and sometimes 4600 speeds.

Save the cash for nv30 in 6-8 months or r300 in 2-4 months

eaadams why did you say save the cash for nv30 in 6-8 months or r300 in 2-4 months ? I mean thats a long time for the nv30 to wait sorta. r300 not too bad but i not sure if i want a ATI sense the way they are with games. Drivers are getting better i know but still.
Why should i wait? i mean won't the nv30 be like $399 when it first comes out? Plus other versions like $299? Or will there be a $149.99 to $199.99 version? Also what suppose to be so good about it? I keep hearing about this movie quality like gaming but thats hard to believe. I will believe it when i see it i guess. But 8 months is close to a year to wait to me. Also what if i got a GF4 ti 4400 instead would that for sure overclock to GF4 ti4600 speeds with the same features as if i would get the GF4 ti 4600 without any extra cooling? And why does only some GF4 ti4200 overclock to GF4 ti 4600 speeds?

Pabster can not afford both 🙁 I wish i could. I may beable to if i save more but i rather get it later if i have to for the HD. But i am sure a WD 8 mb of cache HD is more than fast enough if i do not feel like spending the money on my first SCSI card. Too bad i do not have a scsi card already it would be so much cheaper.

SCSI is getting cheap these days. I'm seeing 29160's and DC390U3W's (both excellent U160 mainstream controllers) at the $100 point. You can go even cheaper with a generic LSI card for around $75 which is comparable to DC390U3W. All excellent controllers with solid drivers for the full Winbloze product line. 🙂 Additionally, if you won't be adding several SCSI drives to the chain, you could get by even cheaper with a U2W card (80MB/s) which would be sufficient for a single 10K or 15K drive.

If you don't want to drop the "big bucks" for X15-ish performance, Quantum's 10K III may be a better choice. They run quietier and a bit cooler (of course, these are 10K rather than 15K units) and offer excellent price/performance. These drives are speedier than WD's "SE" series. You won't get 120GB for $185, but you can find 36GB units around the $220 price point, perhaps a bit less. Throw one in for a boot/OS drive alongside a decent mainstream IDE unit and you'll notice a significant performance increase. Use the IDE unit for storage (where IDE has a great price/performance advantage) but throw your OS and apps/games on the SCSI drive.

I'd say you may be better off with a U2W controller and, say, an 18GB 10K III than the Ti4200. Especially considering NV30 and R300 are just around the corner. Unless you really need a few extra FPS...
