What would cause no picture but sound on a VCR?

Have a GE VG2058 VCR that plays sound but has a scrambled picture. I think the tracking might be off but not sure. I lost the remote so I ain't sure if I can fix the tracking without it.

The channel buttons are also the tracking buttons but they do nothing when a movie is playing. Any ideas?

Maybe some crap on the video heads - put in some tape you don't care about and play it start to finish, more than once if necessary

or you could just use a head cleaning tape and do it in a fraction of the time.

The video jacks are fine. I get the normal blue screen when the VCR is powered on. Unless theres a different signal activated through the video jacks once a tape is it. I tried cleaning the heads without any luck. How does one adjust the tracking on one?

SMP what do you mean I don't have the right codec installed. How do you install a codec on a VCR LOL.

I get a unuseable sign through video mode on my TV. I been running it through the coax.

I got it hooked up right. Only time the screen scrambles is when I hit the play button and the movie plays. The rest of the VCR signal when powered on is ok.

if the tape is copied, or you're running it through a DVD player or some other device between the VCR and the TV, it's probably macrovision.

every tape recorded and not recorded. The VCR is hooked straight to the TV. I wouldnt bother with it but the little ones have alot of VCR tapes.

When I hooked up my VCR using only coax, I screwed up and connected the ins + outs wrong. This caused the channel pass through to work correctly from the wall jack with the VCR off but when I projected a picture from the VCR (programming it or video tape or cable channels through the VCR) it gave sound but no picture. That is why I suggested that you try switching the cables.

You mean switching to a different coax cable or try a/v output on the VCR? I've tried both a/v and coax.

a/v output gives me no signal when playing a tape but sound and the coax just gives me scrambled picture and no sound. I have tried different coax cables.

woohoo how does one know if the head is clogged and how does one unlcogg it?

If you have tried both coax and rca cables, it is most likely a problem with the heads. You might try a head cleaner, but in the end it will probably be cheaper and easier to replace the vcr than worry with repair. I used to do support for Phillips-Magnavox, and we often had this question come up. It's a real bummer, but these days a vcr is pretty much disposable.

What happened to mine was I misread it. I had the coax from the wall going into the coax out on the vcr and I had the coax to the tv connected to the coax in on the vcr. I switched the cables around on the vcr and it worked then.
