What would cause a PC to freeze intermittently?

My Internet connection would turn on and off. I tried everything and narrowed it down to the NIC. I swapped out the NIC and replaced it with a new one. The second one started giving me problems needing a fresh reinstall of drivers everytime I used it.

Now my PC just freezes up for 10 seconds at a time. I took out the NIC and did a clean install of WinXP Pro but it still freezes up, even during the install.

My system was stable for the last year. I haven't done anything with it other than install SETI recently (which isn't the problem since the prog is not running or listed in processes under task manager).

What could cause my PC to freeze like this all of a sudden?

Try different RAM.
Re-seat the Processor and heatsink.
Unplug all devices except for RAM, CPU, HDD, Video.
Run in Safe Mode to see if it freezes there too.

I had this exact problem with a Netgear NIC. No matter what I did, I had to constantly reinstall the driver to get it to work.

I changed to a Linksys NIC ($5 after MIR!) and it fixed all my freezing problems.

When you replaced the NIC, did you replace it with the same model or did you get one from a different manufacturer?
