What would cause a HDD to fail a short test but not extended?

I have a 1TB WD that failed short test of data lifeguard, but zero filling and extended test checked out. The error on short test is status 07 read failure.

07: SMART Offline Immediate Command Failure Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) Offline Immediate command failed. This may be due to a media error. It also may be due to a defective connection. Retest after checking the connections. Replace the drive if the error repeats.

I'd unplug the SATA cable & plug back in (both ends) to make sure there's a good connection, or replace the cable & test again. If you still getting the error, it's probably a media error.

It is just weird to me because shouldn't an extended test do all the exact things as a short test and then some?

It's a (SMART) Offline Immediate command failed, not once it starts running. In all likelihood, the drive should probably be replaced.

I ran into the exact same thing today. On two different Western Digital internal drives. A 1 TB and a 2 TB. They both passed the SMART test and the extended test in WD Data Lifeguard tools. They failed the 'quick test' with the error: 07-SMART offline Immediate Command Error. I was about to trash the both of them but decided to try one more thing. I used GPARTED to delete the partition on the drives, and then I created a EXT4 partition covering the entire drive. After that they both passed all three tests. Go figure. (They each had a NTFS partition originally - I could afford to wipe the drives.)
