What would cause a cooking stone to break?

We were cooking pizzas today. Had the first one in there and then all of a sudden we hear a clatter. Wasnt that amazingly loud and sounded like the grates in the oven moved. We thought maybe something shifted in the oven so we didnt bother to look inside. So I go to take the pizza out and find the stone cracked. Was a very clean break with no fragments. The smaller piece sorta flew to the back of the oven. Any ideas of what could cause that? Could steam from a pot underneath it cause it to break like that?

Sorry no pics as no digi cam

Usually happens when the stone has got damp.

Water seeps into the pores of the stone and when it heats up turns to steam, expands and pop!

They break like that eventually.
My last one did the same thing after several years.

Could be steam. Could also be that the stone isn't homogeneous, so the various materials heat/cool at different rates, and expand and contract at different rates, thus causing internal stresses.

I'd say rapid changes in temperature...
Or that vaporizing water in cracks. It still sounds not plausible though.

Was it cold before you put it in the oven? Could be temperature differential. Probably water in the stone though.
