What would cause a computer not to access certain sites?

I posted this before without much help so I am trying again.

Once in a while my computer cannot access a site. It is not a problem with the site being down, or slow. It's not even technically a 404 because it can't even find the server. It's not just my computer, but any computer on the LAN. I even tried on a Pocket PC.

Also I can verify that the sites are up by calling friends up nearby.

I am not blocking any sites or running any firewalls, outside of the built in one from the router. So what is going on?

Any ideas?

Is it all sites that are being blocked or a few in particular? Also, is your entire internet connection down during that time? Might just be something with your ISP

Just one at a time. Right now it's the forums at head-fi.org

And no, my internet connection has never gone down at this location.

Check the restricted site on IE (internet option--->security)
Check the content adviser (internet option--->content)
Also check the privacy should it be setup to default ?

Checked those. I try the sites on both IE and Firebird. Even FTP. I cannot even ping them.

Did you check your host file to see if you accidentally d/l something that mod the host file. Try that.

Very good idea! I did think of this yesterday. My host file is empty except for the standard MS instructions.

It sounds like a dns issue. Try 128.21.230.121 for the site itself, and I will get the forums in a minute....
128.21.50.111
That is www4.head-fi.org/forums/

If you get through using IP address, then it is a problem with your ISP's DNS servers, most likely. you can easily make your own host file entry to cover the issue, this is usually quicker than any other solution.

Tried that as well. Cannot get through with IP using IE or Firebird. :( Is this the weirdest problem or what?!

Have used a static IP for the last few months, currently using static as we speak.

Ever try to run a tracert when you're having problems connecting to see if one of the hops on the way is not working?
