what would cause a clock to drift forward?

so, I've got a machine whose clock seems to be drifting forward 2-3 minutes every ~12 hours. nothing too noticeable in the short term, but wait a week and suddenly it's ahead by 20 minutes.

any clue what could cause a forward drift? I've experienced a backwards drift as a result of a dying CMOS battery, but never forward.

obviously it's fixable via time syncs and it's not causing any significant issues, but I'm a little concerned about what the underlying causes could be.

Actually, a low CMOS battery can cause a related clock to run fast as well as slow.

I'm also thinking bad memory and faulty CPU's - but probably not ones of today's market. I mentioned in another thread about an AMD XP Barton chip that had the core teensy bit chipped off from installing a HSF. It would not only report abnormal temps, but the clock ran a few seconds quicker. After a month, it would be a day or so ahead.
