Let's say we get some fantastic solid-state hard drive and battery life advances, but that we can't do holography or mind-reading (computer control via a mind link). What would your ultimate laptop be?
For me, I think the following would be great:
-single, unified connector for video, audio, etc., similar to the new MacBook Pro's magnetic power cable but smaller - easy to pop in with magnetic guidance, wouldn't break if you tripped on it; easy to hook up a whole-house speaker system or giant-screen television (a few of these connectors on the laptop for audio systems, video systems, etc.)
-built-in projector (this may be a stretch, but hey, who knows with those crazy bright LEDs...)
-really good speakers (planar ribbons anyone?)
-awesome screen. I really like the new glossy screens on laptops.
-widescreen (duh)
-extendable screen (vertically) - screen could be on rails like one of those old-school pointer-pens, so you could raise it to a more ergonomic height
-instant boot, like a pocketpc
-no optical drives needed - wireless networking anywhere in the world via satellite with unlimited high-speed storage
-all-day battery life - then just drop it in a charging dock at home
-Google operating system similar to OS X - stable, easy to find things, no crashes or conflicts
-1/4" or 1/2" thick - not so thin that the keys would be useless, but not so thick that it'd be heavy. something like a thin school notebook
-"Beetle interior" - my wife's new Beetle doesn't have a single hard edge anywhere; all of the corners are rounded and you can't scrape your finger on anything - like that, except on the outside of the case
-really hard, durable material - no paint chipping off, no dents; Titanium PowerBook anyone?
-converts into a real tablet PC for taking notes, with quality as good and sharp as paper
-curved ergonomic keyboard - no more hurt wrists
-keyboard placed a few inches before the screen, rather than right up against the screen
-a good wireless mouse that's not tiny or weighs a ton (like an MX510 without the weight of an MX1000)
-built-in studio-quality webcam with Logitech Orbit-style tracking technology; full-screen high-quality streaming with no skipping
-awesome microphone that sounds like a recording studio and can intelligently filter out background noise with software
-smart networking - hassle-free satellite connection, easy to share files with people
-also local networking - wireless scanner inside can detect your friend's 80" OLED TV when you're in the room, which you can then drag and drop a full-length movie instantly to for watching
-excellent security - no spyware, virus, hackers, etc.
-completely silent, no noise at all
In a nutshell, something non-obstrusive that would simply let you do what you want to do without worrying about signal strengths, program speed, storage space, converting files, etc. I'm not sold on the idea of flying cars, jet packs, and all that jazz. I'm talking about something that could realistically happen. I'd like to see it for desktops, too - think of an iMac all-in-one computer, but skinnier (like with an OLED display) and a Logitech di Nuvo-style keyboard.
