What would be the cause of this?

Nec DVD burner 3540a. Only reads pressed DVDs. Will not read any other media🙁 Am I missing something here?

Sounds like a laser lens problem. Have you run a cleaner? Is there smoking in the area?

No, non smoking home. Can't run a cleaning disc, the only one I have is on CD media, and it wont read CD's. 🙁

RMA it or look for a firmware update to see if that corrects the problem.

I am sure the warranty is long expired. It has a manufacture date of June 05...oh well🙁

Check on http://www.cdfreaks.com in the NEC section for possible info on this. Besides trying to install the latest firmware for your drive (usually also linked at CDFreaks) also try installing Adaptec's ASPI layer software, it often helps strange DVD burner problems. It comes with a utility to check if you already have ASPI software on there and what version it is. Nero burning software has its own ASPI layer software available and you could use that if you'd rather.

>>> DO THIS FIRST!!! <<< - Test for that DRM crapware that came on some SONY audio CDs recently - check the list of disks that have that crap on 'em at Sony's site and don't play those (on any PC) again. That DRM crapware can really screw up your burners. Have Sony send you a clean replacement as well. You should be able to find a utility to test for and clean that crapware on http://www.majorgeeks.com .

I tried about 10 different firmware revisions from cdfreaks to no avail, as well as the ASPI thing within Nero. I gave up and tossed it into the trash🙁
