I am deciding between the V5 - Radeon 32DDR (or 64DDR) - GF2GTS

my system specs are in my sig, and i have a 15" monitor (im not getting a bigger one till the prices drop on a 17" flatscreen).

I want a card that can run really good clear and crisp colors in my games and in windows apps.
I like to really only play my games in 800x600 mode.
And I want to be able to play the new games like The new doom coming out and the wolfienstien (spell right?) game, I dont like the Q3 or UT.
I play halflife, soldier of fortune, RB6, Delta force 2, and i want to be able to play the new games coming out like I said before.
I dont want to have to pay $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for a card either... so What would you consider the best for me?

I upgraded to a V5500 from a V3 3000. I choose this route because I was so pleased with the V3 and have always had excellent cards from 3DFX. As you probably know, the V3 is about as compatible with games as a video card could get. The V5500 is no different in this respect. Every one of your older games as well as any game on the horizon will play fine with the V5500.

On the other hand, I put together another computer for my son simular to yours using my old V3. It runs everything very well and he is thrilled with it. You need to ask yourself if indeed you even want a new card. First thing I'd do is put another 128mb of memory in your comp.

I personally would recommend a GeForce 2 MX. At low resolutions like 800x600 you don't see much difference between it and the fastest nVidia cards, let alone the V5500 or the Radeon. The only reason I would go with the Radeon in your case is for its DVD software, or the V5500 for its FSAA. If these aren't huge concerns, save some money with the MX.

In my opinion the MX will be insufficient for the new games coming out. It's a crippled budget card.

Taz4158,

I know that benchmarks aren't everything, but look at
this

The cpu is similar to what aUt0eXebat is using, and although he expressly does not like Quake, he mentions he will still be playing games based on the Q2 engine. With product cycles still at 6 months for video cards, nothing is technically "future proof."

I wouldn't call the MX a crippled budget card when playing at 800x600.

omfg, if 800x600 is your max gaming resolution, get the 5500 and enable FSAA.

not even a consideration here, this is a no-brainer.

I agree with RoboTECH. At 800x600, the FSAA of the V5 5500 will shine for you. And it doesn't hurt that the prices on these have dropped dramatically.

Yeah, with the V5500 at what, 135 bucks now? It's the best deal, though a 17" flat screen isn't really that expensive anymore, check out the hot deals forum...=)
