Best car if you don't care about status would be Hyundai or a Kia. Probably Hyundai for the warranty

[edit]of course, Daewoo should have been included too

Nissan Maxima.

for that price, you should be able to get a 96 with about 80,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the options.

the maxima is just as reliable as the Accord, faster, and looks a hell of a lot better.....

the maxima is probably going to have significantly higher safety ratings than a kia or a haundai (sp?).

if you care about your own safety, get the maxima or something bigger by all means.

You could easily get a 1999 or 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS almost brand new with LOW MILES for close to $10,000 that would be your best choice because it's practically brand new and still has the manufacturer's warranty (5year/60k bumper to bumper and 10/100k powertrain). I wouldn't knock a Hyundai until you drive one or hear from owners of recent models.

Otherwise I've seen mint condition 1997 Honda Accord LX, 4 door, automatics with power everything for around $10,500
