If you live in the United States, then you are living in an empire. Don't take that statement wrong. I'm not saying that we on an empire building quest, I'm saying that the U.S. is already an empire, greater than even the Roman Empire in its influence and power.

What, pray tell, is the point of "peeling" a grape? No wonder the Roman Empire fell...they couldn't handle eating grape skins!!

If you were one of the elite nothing has changed much. You had water tenders for hot baths, the finest silks and cotton clothes, much leisure time, Roman games instead of NBA, and lots of women.

If you were like 99.9% of the poplulation much has changed. If you were male good chance conscript in the army with horrendous conditions and eating only dried meat and hauling 90 lbs of gear sleeping in the elements. Females got a little better treatment if she did'nt mind being raped whenever her master wanted. She got to live indoors and only worked about 100 hours a week.

I don't know if anyone really peeled grapes - it's a frequently quoted statement and is also one of the activities which is often depicted in representations of the Roman upper classes. It is often used in allusion to debauchery in general rather than with the intention of debasing the Roman Empire. Whether it is a historical fact (or even possible) I don't know.

-didn't come it with it
-just referenced it
-can't help you
