what would be a good laptop~netbook companion for traveling between $300-500?
Small, lightweight, battery power.

Bought the Toshiba Netbook for $299 and it was the worst piece of trash that I ever lay my hands on.
Web browsing was slow as hell, and it crashed the minute I try MSN Messenger, and I couldn't power it off.
It ran for several hours even after I close the lid, and hold down the power button. The fan run at top speed and vibrates the entire netbook.
I returned while the thing still running (should have seen the perturb look on the kid at the customer service desk at best buy).
I ended up with the nicely crafted Acer Aspire Quadro 5552G (quad cores, 6GB ram, and Radeon HD6650M). It is about 2X heavier than the netbook, and twice the price at $629. However, the keypad was a joy to use, and it is screaming fast (quickest laptop that I have use). The video quality is surprisingly good for a laptop, the 1.3mp built in webcam worked flawlessly.
The only gripe that have is the speaker and microphone quality is lousy (wasn't any where as good as the Toshiba netbook).
