What Would Be A Better Term Than Artificial Intelligence?

I have heard it suggested that the term "Artificial Intelligence" may actually do a disservice to AI once true AI is actually created, because the "artificial" aspect of the name implies inferiority to a "real" intelligence.

From the Wiki page for the possible alternative term "Synthetic Intelligence."

Synthetic intelligence (SI) is an alternative term for artificial intelligence. It emphasizes the belief of many researchers that the intelligence of machines is not an imitation or in any way artificial; it is a genuine form of intelligence. According to this view, the term artificial intelligence is an oxymoron; implying that the intelligence is not intelligent. Haugeland (1986) proposes an analogy with artificial and synthetic diamonds?only the synthetic diamond is truly a diamond.

What term in the poll do you think might work better? If you have one not listed, post it and I will add it. :)

When they kill all of us they can call themselves whatever they want. We'll be extinct intelligence.

When we finally create artificial intelligence, and it has the capacity to be annoyed by that name, we'll let it decide on what to call itself.

"Superior intelligence" is the first thing that comes to mind. ;)

"Vaporware Intelligence".

In my humble opinion, the kind of "intelligence" hinted at in the article will never be a reality for computers. Real intelligence is as much creativity as it is brain processing power. Almost all AI algorithms are brute-force methods, in which the computer searches thousands of solutions or situations a second instead of actually "thinking" or "comprehending". The term "artificial intelligence" is actually quite fitting, since the whole notion of a computer being intelligent is just an illusion. Like a bad magic trick, it appears real only to those who don't know any better.

Brunette (or brown) hair dye...

(cause we men know that when blondes dye their hair brown, it's called artifical intelligence!) :D

Simulated Intelligence

There is nothing intelligent about current AI. Intelligence implies the ability to creatively solve problems. Right now it's just complex algorithms, simple stimulus response. It can't come up with new solutions to problems that have not been previously defined and answered.

The word simulated means that it may look intelligent, but it's actually not.

I picked Computational Intelligence. Saying "Machine Intelligence" somehow puts a picture of bulky mechanism. Synthetic intelligence gives me a sense that it is somehow material, kind of like synthetic oil :p By definition any of these words would do OK, but in the context of culture, not as good..

Artificial intelligence is just a matter of degrees - artificial life is the really interesting stuff.

Peter F. Hamilton's Pandora's Star and the sequel Judas Unchained has a character called the SI, or Sentient Intelligence.

It'd be silly for us to create unrestrained AI so whatever we create would have artificial limiters on it, making AI an apt term.
