what would an equivalent p4 northwood be to an xp-m @ 2.3ghz? 2.4ghz?

I am not really qualified to answer in respect to your needs, since I really don't do video encoding, yet🙂.

I currently have an A64 2800+@2.35 and P4 2.4C@3.3 setup. The A64 is the king of gaming but other than that, both seem equally pleasing in normal use. I can feel the HT help a little when doing a few things at the same time (ie: surfing or working while burning or running antivirus in the background). I never had a high clocked Barton, but did have several TBreds around 2.3. I prefer either the P4C or A64 over them.

So would I make the switch? Well I did (over the TBred at least).

if anything, an xp @ 2.3ghz would be around a P4 at 2.9ghz. at 2.5ghz, the xp is roughly a 3.1ghz. the xp's dont get that much stronger as clockspeed increases. that's why the barton was never a competitor against the intel procs wtih 800mhz fsb, dual channel mem, and hyperthreading. the barton class was technically meant to compete against 533mhz fsb, single channel mem, and no hyperhtreading. for example:

I have a P4 2.26B @3.18GHz and a 2500+@3200+ speeds. Haven't tried any video encoding yet, but gaming benchmarks are dead even.

xp2400@2.00 (T) and P4 2.4C
stock speeds, performace similar, the xp lost in ram performance, but thats not its fault, it was the boards fault
