My sister's family switched to Cox internet and can't use her wireless dsl modem with the new cable modem. I'm trying to find something that's not a piece of junk. It seems to me from reading reviews that most new stuff is junk. I was going to just give her my Linksys wrt54gl-tm but it's old tech plus they have a bunch of wireless devices they use. They have ps3's for watching Netflix and games, wii's, cell phones, computer, printer, etc. I would like to get them a wireless n router but I'm almost scared to from all the bad reviews out there. I want something stable, doesn't require constant resets, doesn't overheat, etc. They live in a 4000 sq ft 2 story house.

Any recommendations on something that won't break the bank. Too many choices / junk.

Most consumer-level wireless routers are junk. If you want really good, reliable performance, you should get enterprise-level stuff. But an enterprise wireless AP will cost you from $1000 and up. Either that or just go with wired.

When I researched this, I found there were two consumer-level routers that work OK, the Asus N56-U and Linksys E4200.

With the E4200 and a 300Mb Wireless NIC, I get about 62Mb/s in my apartment. It's nowhere near the advertised 300Mb/s, and not enough to max out my Internet connection, but it works for when you just want to browse the web wirelessly. With a bigger house, you'll probably have to use 2.4 GHz to increase coverage, which is slower.
