rack of lamb has a semi-strong flavor,

so i'd go for a medium to heavy bodied red.

perhaps a nice california cabernet. or go for a chianti.

Turning Leaf is good. Gallo of Sonoma.

stick with the well-known names. they're well known for a reason.

I think the rules now are whatever tastes good. Screw always going with the 'big' labels, that does not neccesarily say anything. A lot of the most sought after wines are from estates that produce far less than 1,000 cases.

I have been on a big syrah and reisling kick. For me, at least, chianti and pinot grigio are good wines to fall back on. Pinot grigio being the new 'wine of the month' so to speak; becoming very popular.

Specifically for lamb, I would go with a syrah or a chianti myself.

mom suggested an australian vintage of that.

dad suggested zinfandel (not that pink crap) and said it would be perfect with lamb, cut through the fat, etc.

Your mom has good tastes! Only syrah/petite syrah I have had were from California. I would listen to your mother's suggestion and ignore anybody that would mention zinfandel!!!
