Guys, this is my first Quad processor, and I had before an 2.8GHZ AMD, that wasn't exactly a thing of this century, so I heard about the capacity of the software to use all cores and just some of them, like the windows xp... that uses only core duo, can anybody advise what windows should i install for my new rig ... I'm aiming at the Vista Ultimate, but which one should I get the x64 or x86 ? I will also have an Evga 680 SLI LT mob, 4GB Cruciall Balistix 5400 4-4-4-12, and for starts one XFX 8800GT XT. The CPU as mentioned in the title is the Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.4Ghz

Thanks in advance.

Did you read his post? He said he is getting Vista Ultimate. He just doesn't know whether to use x86 or x64.

My advice to him... are you using any 64-bit applications? Then why use a 64-bit OS?

You always seem to give bad advice and also anti-vista,anyway Vista x64 is a fine choice, running all my 32 bit and 64 bit software just fine, not hard to check what 64 bit drivers you need for your hardware.

I'll go as far and say Vista x64 is the most stable Microsft OS I have ever used and I have been using XP for 7 years,so don't say it lightly.

Thanks Guys, then I'll go for the Vista Ultimate x64. But does this mean that all my applications should be also in 64bit? for example my Nero or Skype, MS Office and stuff ?

Vista 64 runs both 32 and 64 bit apps. It should run all your software just fine. The only thing you really need to worry about are drivers for your peripherals. Chances are you'll be fine there though.

Vista x64 runs most 32 bit software, drivers you'll need to get the 64 bit version(easy to find),as to office/specialized software check with the company in question.

I'm running the following 32 bit software with my Vista x64(not my full list but gives you an idea)

Nero 8
Firefox
FOXIT Reader
Quicktime
Printmaster 16
uTorrent
Microsoft Office Word Viewer
ALZip
Spybot
Spywareblaster
SuperAntiSpyware
CCleaner
Olympus Master 2 digital camera software.

and about 40+ games(Baldur's gate,KOTOR,Prey,Bioshock,UT2004,Steam games etc...)

Btw Anti-virus wise for Vista x64 you have a very good selection to choose from.
Freeones like Avast,AVG,ANTI-VIR,paid ones include Bitdefender,NOD32,Kaspersky to name a few.

Remember you can install 64 bit software too,ie for example in my case I'm using Thunderbird 64 bit version email client with my 32 bit firefox browser,I'm also using O&O Defrag 10(64 bit version). I can use 64 bit version of Firefox too(however I find 32 bit version has better web support for flash, java etc..).
Just remember Vista x64 can't run very old 16 bit software due to no 16 bit legacy support in the OS,not a problem for most users anyway.

With 4 gig of ram 64bit Vista is the best way to go. But just so you know, XP will use 4 cores just fine. I've been dual booting XP and Vista, with the latest drivers, gaming performance is equal between Vista and XP, so there isn't a lot of reason to go with the older OS.
