- Celeron 433
- BX motherboard
- 256mb of ram
- ATA100 card
- ATA100 7200rpm HDD

I am thinking about windows 2000 with sp3, but lmk what you think. Thanks

Any windows version would work ok, but 2000 would probably be best. Since (IMHO) its lighter than XP and more stable than 98, ME, etc. And it suports more programs than NT.

We have a couple of machines at work with that config running Win2K SP3. They still work fine. I tested one of them with WinXP, It worked OK, but didn't "feel" as fast ( as when it had Win2K) untill I pumped it up to 512MB. It should work fine for Internet and Office Apps, but I think it will be under-powered for DivX.

98 would feel faster, But 2K will be more reliable. You have enough RAM, so go with the 2K.

Not by much at all, plus for the all time you will save from the speed difference between 2k and 98 will be made up because 98 reboots daily... ;)

You can go with XP. Just disable all non-essential services that aren't needed. This will help you out a lot.

XP with most of the non-essential services disabled or set to manual will result in a startup of XP using about 50mb of memory. It'll run real smooth and I don't think you'll run into any problems stability wise with it.

I run XP on just about all systems nowadays cept when I reload the old 200mhz P Pro's with 32mb ram.. Hehe..

I'll go along with the others in recommending Windows 2000 Pro or XP. Windows 2000 would be my personal choice, because on a computer of that age, the difference in speed between 2000 and XP will probably be quite noticable; though both will be usable, 2000 will definitely feel snappier (especially over XP with visual themes enabled).

W2K SP3 sounds very good to me. One of my customers has a P2-350 with 384 Megs of RAM and it runs very well. Only Divx dosn't run that good but that is in a large part due to the graphics card. With another card DivX runs fine on that machine.

My vote goes for 2k. Though the only version of windows I would run 2k an any box 200mhz or faster with 128mb of ram or more is 2k
