The Dems can't do ANYTHING about Gitmo...They can rante & rave, bitch and complain, but the ONLY thing they could do is to cut funding for it, and I'm sure the DOD would just take the money from somewhere else...like veteran's benefits of something...Now the President could close it, reform it, whatever, as C in C, that falls into his bailiwick, not Congress.

There may be room for the dems to cut off funding for Gitmo. Bush could then say that his 'commander in chief' powers are overriding laws, and we'd have our nifty Supreme Court battle where Alito, Roberts, Scalia and Thomas try to get a fifth vote to say Bush is right.

I somewhat agree with BoomerD----Gitmo is a Presidential play toy and somewhat unique in the world.
A place where no national laws--or Cuban laws apply.

But a democratic congress can give the Pres some real grief over the matter---and we may soon see the battle lines forming up on precisely that issue. With a wounded Pres being rather stupid to invest much political capital defending the activities so cleverly hidden---with such a battle merely spotlighting the extent of the Pres's moral degeneracy.

The thing to understand Lemon Law is that Bush is 'playing chicken' on the issues. If he shut down Gitmo under democratic pressure, the message would be that it had been excessive and unnecessary and the democrats cleaned things up. So, he's more likely to stick with his 'necessary for the nation' story rather than let them get that win.

If he has to shut it down for some reason, the spin can shift to how it had served its purpose and the worst had been dealt with, thank goodness we had a president who did it.

Once the Bushwhackos are convicted of the many acts of treason they've committed, we could send them there for a few years and include free passes on the waterboard rides.

They designed Guantanimo. They should be given a good, up close and personal chance to enjoy the resources they created.

Plenty of room for Rummy, Cheney and Bush.
Maybe we should "retire" them there.

Hopefully there will be some some congressional oversight to make sure everything they do there is legal. Like the resident repubs always say, "If you are doing nothing illegal you have nothing to fear."
