Calif. woman reports biting the bullet in hotdog
Reuters, 05.06.04, 7:14 PM ET

LOS ANGELES, May 6 (Reuters) - A California woman claimed she swallowed a live bullet and bit into a second round while eating a hotdog, and says she has the X-rays to prove it.

Police said on Thursday they were investigating the bizarre incident the 31-year-old woman said happened at a Costco store in Irvine, California, about 47 miles (76 km) southeast of Los Angeles.

"She said she had swallowed one bullet and felt another in her mouth," Irvine police Lt. Jeff Love said. "She showed us the bullet and we took it as evidence. We had them cut up all the other hot dogs and found nothing in the buns."

A spokesman for Seattle-based Costco Wholesale Corp. COST.O> said the company had no comment on the incident, which occurred on Sunday and was still being investigated.

The woman showed local television news an X-ray of her stomach with a bullet lodged in it.

Love said the Hebrew National brand hotdogs served at Costco were prepared under Kosher laws with a high standard of cleanliness, and were X-rayed before leaving the factory.

He said it appeared "highly unlikely" that a hot dog would leave the factory with an undetected bullet in it.

um.. how did she shallow a whole bullet w/o even biting into it? She must have been scarfing that thing down like a fat ass.

Definitely a scam to get money from one of the companies. How would she know she swallowed it? if she knew, why the hell did she do it?

I worked at Arby's for 3 years making sandwiches. We have to cut the beef as we make the sandwiches. I think on 5-6 occasions during my job, a BB fell out of the beef. It is common for cows to be shot with BBs and not show signs of damage to the farmer. The wound heals and the BB is stuck in the meat. Since Arby's cuts the meat thin, any foreign object falls right out, but I could easilly imagine larger pieces of meat going undetected until the consumer bites into it.

But the thing is, the hot dog company said all the meat is ran through a metal detector before leaving the factory. Thus they say the bullet was introduced post-production.

It was a live 9mm bullet.

Oh and I need to b!tch about Arby's:

Why the fsck did I keep getting plastic in my sandwich. Do they not unwrap the meat? I finally complained but that was a mistake. The owner said just come in the next time and say "mike said I get a free meal". Aparrently that is Arby's code for put some salmonella in it. I've never sh!t and puked so much in my entire life. I fscking hate Arby's.

I think it's a scam.

I MIGHT be able to see a small caliber bullet (.22 or something) if it were just the bullet itself, but if the article is right and it was a live round, there's no way in hell you'd be able to eat that and not know it was there till after. Unless this woman was swallowing the hotdog, no way.

Its been 5 years since I worked there, but I doubt things have changed much. There are several ways in which plastic wrap touches the meat.
1) Beef which is unused at the end of the night is plastic wrapped, and stored overnight. I can't imagine someone not unwrapping a 2-10 lb roast before slicing it. Heck the slicer would even have a hard time cutting that.
2) The Arby-Q is individually wrapped in plastic (made from leftover meat which they didn't save in (1). That is supposed to be unwrapped, microwaved, and then put on a bun. I guess the employee could be stupid and not unwrap it before microwaving - getting plastic into the meat.
3) The other meats (turkey for example) are cut daily in the morning and wrapped in 5 or 10 packs. These sandwhiches could not be made without unwrapping them since you'll have 5 sandwhiches worth of meat as well as paper trays if you didn't unwrap them.
4) The hot chicken sandwhiches (strips or whole grilled fillet) are individually wrapped in plastic. The plastic should be removed before microwaving it - see #2 you may have an idiot working at your Arby's.

it def sounds like a scam, i think she swallowed it, also unless it is a .22 it is sorta hard to chew and ot notice it hell even with a 22! you would basiclaly have to rip off peices and swallow it whole
I have been to that costco too lol

Definitely a scam. If anything, the victim would have suffered tooth enamel damage during chewing. But it's hard and painful to try and deliberately do that on your own, much easier to just swallow the whole thing.
