Thinking for purchasing an Asus Z87-Pro mobo. What would I use the built-in wifi for? I've got a router and the system with the Z87-Pro would be attached to the router by cable.

Thanks,
BGC

For people who don't want to attach the system to the router by cable.

I would and do use it in machines that I have set up as HTPCs in my house since I don't have my house wired with CAT6 yet. This will likely be replaced with powerline networking, but for now its ease of use is nice. There are a lot of usefulness in this - such as if you are needing a rig in an area that you don't want to have a lot of wire mess, or for temporary connectivity (like a few weeks ago I just moved into my new house and did this).

For me, the new system will always be connected to the router by cable. The only thing I can think of that might be of use is if you can do something along the line of Widi or something similar.

My wife's PC is on the second floor and running a wired connection is just not possible. Having on-board wifi was nice to have.

If you already have a router then the wi-fi on a desktop is pretty useless. The speed is abysmal when trying to download anything worthwhile. Wireless keyboards and mice seem like a good idea until their batteries run out at the worst of times...

I use it, because running a cable around the floorboards would be tacky, and the cable drop for the modem/router is aaaall the waaaay oooooveer theeeere.

Printer and NAS got moved over by the router though.
