What will I see? What should I do?

I am setting up a brand new rig and initially plan on a minimum setup when I first try the system.

I will have just the vid card, monitor, one stick of memory, and the cpu w/fan.

When I first boot, what will I see on the monitor, and what do I do next?

Thanks in advance for any input! 🙂

You will see the "same" thing you see on any other computer. The BIOS will load and test the memory and then look for something to boot and stall there. It may give an error since no hard drive will be installed, but it will still load initially.

I would:
(1) Install a floppy / cd-rom
(2) Install a hard drive
(3) Go into the BIOS (by hitting del, F1, or whatever your computer says) and change all the settings to what you want (shouldn't be too many)--floppy drive, boot sequence, memory speed, etc.
(4) Insert a boot diskette or boot cd-rom depending on what OS you are going to install once you get your hard drive installed.
(5) FDISK your drive depending on which OS you want to install, etc, etc.

Oooooopppppppssss.....forgot something!!

BenRosey.......regarding items 4, and 5:

I will probably be installing Win98SE for which I have both a floppy and CD Rom. When I put the floppy in and reboot the system it asks if I want to install with or without CD Rom support. What option do I choose at that point?

At what point to I FDisk and format my hard drive and install the OS?

Thanks again!

Well, since you have the Win98 CD, then you'll want to have your CD drive ready and to boot with CD support. From that point, go to the CD drive and run the setup program.

It depends what stae your hard drive is in at the moment.
If it's brand new, then you'll have to FDisk and format it into existence.
If it has stuff on it, then you'll probably need to format.
If it's already partitioned and formatted, then you're ready to go!
