Here's the situation:
I have an mp3 player I listen to music on, and my iphone which I use for GPS. The iphone isn't loud enough so I can't hear the GPS directions, and I can't/won't use the phone for music anymore. What I want is to have the audio output from the mp3 player AND the iphone to go through my car speakers. My first thought was just a 3.5mm y-adapter, but that's normally to split the output to 2 headphones and I think it'll fry something to have 2 powered audio sources going into one aux port.

So... am I right in that this is bad, and is there anything I can do or buy to do this?

I'm also not sure which thread this should go in... but it involves more gadgets then anything so I went with this. :p

Hmmm, that's what I was afraid of. Doesn't look like there's any retail stores I know of that carry such things.

Using a Y-adapter you will have twice the line noise and reduce the audio output level due to each input jack absorbing some of the voltage of the other input. As mentioned by a previous poster, this can cause device malfunctions as well because many devices (especially phones) carefully monitor voltage changes on the headphone jack. I would strongly suggest using one device for everything (Music, GPS, Phone calls, etc).

My Droid Incredible does this beautifully - I can stream Pandora and Xiialive (Shoutcast) or play MP3s, and still hear incoming text messages and call announcements read to me, as well as GPS navigation instructions, and place and receive calls over the car radio's speakers or by Bluetooth headset. My music is even paused and resumed automatically... all without even touching my phone - it's awesome.

The 16gigs on my phone is pretty well taken by just apps and vids already, and I have a lot of music I like to carry around. I'm also a stickler for sound quality and Apple comes nowhere close to proper sound reproductions. It doesn't even allow custom EQs.

Anyway, it's not a big enough deal to worry about. I'm out of time to get anything online, but I'll try to find something for later.

I would just order that thing that cardiac linked, plug in your devices, set your line levels mount it under the dash somewhere, and be done with it.
