What will happen if I disable "IRQ Steering" (via SYSTEM-->DEVICE MANAGER-->SYSTEM DEVICES-->PCI BUS-->IRQ STEERING...

I am asking for trouble?

Can someone explain the IRQ Steering feature to me?

Thanks, rnmcd

IRQ Steering is a way to have multiple PCI devices share a single IRQ. With available IRQs being scarce in many people's PCs as they add devices, it helps plug-and-play to work better.

My guess is that if you don't have enough free IRQs, turning IRQ steering off could cause you trouble.

For more information on IRQ steering, see http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q182/6/04.ASP.
For information on turning off IRQ steering (you might have to do it in the BIOS also), see http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q182/6/28.ASP

I think IRQ steering is pretty much here to stay with Win98 and up and most modern motherboards. It is so soundly implemented in the Bios these days that even disabling it completely in Windows it is still rooted in via the Bios and difficult to work around. It really hurts nothing and can be very helpful with ISA/PCI IRQ conflicts.
