What will be your next CPU?

I'm honestly not sure yet. Part of me wants to cheap out and get something like a 3200+ Venice and overclock it as far as it'll go until I can overhaul everything for an M2/dualcore system next year, but I also kind of want to upgrade to an X2/(R520 or G70) in the near future. I don't know how long I'll wait to make a decision, because this Athlon XP is getting kind of old at this point. 😛

Yeah, I voted X2, but I will probably wait until the M2s come out and maybe see what Intel is going to do with yonah and everyhting...

I personally plan on having a X2 CPU by the end of the year hopefully. The keyword is being 'hopefully.' It heavily depends on the price and market at the time when the lower-end X2 models come out so I'm hoping to strike when the time is right. Wait wait wait is all I can do for now.

Had to go with X2 like the others, if that doesnt work out (read not enough cash), then ill wait till M2 simply because I wont buy anything netburst related, but if that changes I could be looking at intel in a year.

I remember you beeing in same boat as me, except I only have the 9800pro 😛

I'll see what I can get my hands on in augsut september. The X2 is still not in stock over here (which is what I want), and the R520 need to bring something spectacular if I'm not going for the 7800GT(X). The 7800GTX and 4400+ are a bit in the pricy end, so the 3800+/4000+ X2 and 7800GT would be a welcome sighting during the next month.

The good thing is my birthday is up soon so some of the other parts needed may come to me that way. 🙂

M2 is the next socket announced by AMD for next generation chipset.
The M2 socket is also 939 pins, but is not compatible with current socket 939

The new socket is for the support of DDR2 memory.

i'll probably get an x2 next year and then be done with upgrades for a couple years. i don't see an m2 with a new board and ddr2 in my future.

Probably an X2 eventually. I'm getting bored with all the PC games I have though, and that was my only reason for upgrading in the past... better gaming performance.

a new socket 939 for AMD, that among other things will be used when AMD moves to DDR-II.

Why would anyone want to spend all the extra cash on a new mobo AND high latency DDR2?

I voted X2. Flash the bios, pop in the new proc, and I'm good to go. That said, I'm sure I'll keep my Venice until early next year at least.

M2 is actually a 940 pin CPU socket. Quad cores are going to be coming out on the socket F which will be the server socket. Probably wont be till 2008 before desktops get 4 cores but by then they should be closing in on a k9 design.
