your question seems misleading as the 15000 rpm seagate has 3.6 access time so what are you asking whats the next lowest or next harddrive comming out with 15000 rpm spindle speed?

The manufacturers own specs often tend to be somewhat misleading when it comes to HDD's.

I hear the next step is to design the next generation of HD's with a transmission built in between the motor and the platters, for really high cruising rmp's. Don't know if it will be automatic or manual. I'm hoping for a 6 speed manual myself.

Based on Seagate's past record, the 3rd generation X15 should be out sometime in August. They have not announced nor hinted at anything, so this is pure speculation.

The last highend 15k harddrive was announced in Feb of 2001, by seagate. Looking at the trends it seems like new highend scsi hard drives are usually released each year. So there should be one coming out soon. The specs I really doubt there would be much decrease in the access time, just higher transfer rates due to better platter density.

I wouldn't expect an announcement from Seagate this early. The only reason they announced the X15-36LP in February last year was to steal thunder from IBM's announcement of their 36Z15. IBM's drive was embarrassed by the Seagate so badly that the drive never even reached the consumer market. Might be a while before IBM regroups and brings real competition to Seagate.

Currently, there are 4 different 15000 rpm drives:

(1) Seagate Cheetah X15
(2) Seagate Cheetah X15-36LP
(3) IBM Ultrastar 36Z15
(4) Fujitsu MAM

Of these, Cheetah X15 is an older drive. The second-generation 15K drives outperform it now. IBM 36Z15 appears to run too hot, and shows lower performance, at least according to the reviews. Cheetah X15-36LP and MAM vie for the title of the fastest hard drive on the planet. X15-36LP appears to be a better all-around drive, while MAM shows a slightly better performance with databases.

Nope, the latest 15K drive is Fujitsu MAM (not to be confused with MAN, which is a 10K drive).

Even though the Fujitsu MAM is a 10k rpm drive, it's performance (according to specs released by fujitsu) seems good... However I'd prefer the Seagate Cheetah X15-36LP

As I'm about to purchase a Seagate Cheetah drive, I'm curious why you guys prefer the 36. Isn't the scsi 15x 18 gig as fast as the scsi 15x 36 gig ?

I can see the 36gig has an 8mb buffer. Is this the reason for the preference and does it make a big difference, or is it just needed for a drive of this capacity ?

Dude, Solid State HDs are gonna be the next best thing. They look like a big block of ram, and are faster than any other drive in the market. Might be a little pricy, though

The 36LP designation is not the HD size, but a model number indicating that its the 2nd version of the X-15. The X-15-36LP is available in both 18.4 and 36.7 sizes.
