It depends. Early benchmarks showed that Doom3 ran faster on Nvidia architecture. But that was a while ago and it was based on beta code. I am sure it will run equally well on either ATI or Nvidia cards.

I agree, and to be honest, I think it will probably run fine on 9800ish cards as well!

Carmack was aiming to make the game so that it could be RUN on a geforce 3 (not with a lotta eye candy of course) Imagine how vastly superior todays cards are to a geforce 3, and if you think about it, just about any mid to high end card will run Doom 3 just fine

The "best" card will surely be the bleeding-edge 6800 Ultra or X800 XT PE, but I imagine a 9700 Pro or better will run the game well.

Depends on how you define "run well". I think a good test is Far Cry. See how well you can run Far Cry and Doom 3 should be similar. I'm thinking around 50fps for Radeon 9800 pro with decent quality settings, but nobody knows. =)
