The biggest headache for Win2000 was waiting for all the
companies to release working drivers for peripherals,
cards, etc...and the number of Win9x/WinNT4 drivers that
worked for Win2000 was small...

WinXP is supposed to share a lot of the kernel with
Win2000...Does this mean that a lot of the Win2000 drivers
will work without modification in WinXP? Will a lot
of them work WELL without mods?

WinXP, like Win98SE, WinME and Win2K uses the Windows Driver Model (WDM) for most of the drivers. Video is a notable exception. Some newer driver sets, like the recent leaked WDM SBLive drivers, work in 98SE through to Win2000. In other words, chances are there will be a lot of overlap in drivers.

Getting timely drivers should be sweet when XP comes out. Microsoft is going to aggressively push for people to upgrade 95/98/Me to XP Home Edition which will use the same drivers as XP Pro, Server, etc. Manufacturers just have 1 driver to write now for the Windows world.
