What will an amp do for me?

I'm a car audio newbie..and am basically looking for some better sound. I currently have a JVC headunit which produces 19W per channel (RMS), and 50W per channel max...and a couple of Infinity's in front rated at 60W RMS, 180W max.

Now I'm looking to add a little low range to my system..and was wondering if an amp will do that for me? I have no idea how this stuff works..but I'm assuming that since the speakers are rated at a much higher wattage than my headunit can handle, it's not making the most of it..and an amp will solve that problem?

I still have the stock speakers in the back..and I set my headunit to play at Front Fade +3 out of 6..so they're not being used that much.

So now if I do get an amp..should I look into a 2-channel amp, just for the front, or should I look into a 4-channel one. Would just providing more power to the front provide me with the better low range I want? I don't need anything really bassy or anything, just something to smooth out the sound a bit. Is a sub necessary for this? I'd like to be as frugal as possible here..so if an amp will improve my sound I'd really prefer that.

I'm also wondering how low is low. My infinity's are rated to go from 54hz up to 20khz. Do these numbers really matter?

Well, 54 hz is not low. You should look to get down around 20 hz for low bass.

Now, I'd really recommend just getting a small amp and a subwoofer. Or, just get something like this: Link and connect it to the pre-outs on your JVC. Very simple, and will add nice bass to your system.
