What were you doing the first time you opened a PC case?

I remember that the first time I opened my PC case was to install a USB PCI card because my PC didn't come with USB ports. This was back in 1999 or so.

My first PC arrived with the video card blatantly out of the PCI slot. I was so afraid of losing warranty and called Quantex before I attempted to open it.

Sure enough the tech was like, just take the case off and reseat the card. lol

I just wanted to see what was in there I think. After a while I disassembled it and put it back together to see how everything fit. Among other things, it convinced me that I should have no problem assembling my own computer.

I installed a video card in my Gateway desktop back in 2001. My first build was two years later.

Doing something productive? Putting a new video card in a Dell circa 2003. I looked inside earlier computers to see what was in there though.

My case was a Horizontal type and was a fliptop with 2 buttons on the side that latched it shut. So I'm pretty sure it was just to take a look at all the innards.

I had to double my RAM to run Netscape Navigator.

This, exactly. Or not long before that. I couldn't figure out why it couldn't just use 4MB and the swapfile, but it couldn't. :p Oddly, that computer ran slower with 8MB RAM.

First time I opened a computer part it was a 5 1/4" floppy drive for a Commodore 64. Needed to modify the drive so I could add a second one. First time opening a PC case was our Dell 486 to add 4MB of RAM so I could play a new game.

Added a SoundBlaster 16 to my 486DX 33mhz. Doom, Xcom, X-Wing, Space Hulk, all with sound! So awesome.

Added a 20meg MFM drive to an 8088.

Quote from my dad when we did it: "Son we are NEVER going to fill this up."

Wow, that's exactly what I was doing. In 1988, I put in a 20 meg MFM drive into my Tandy 1000SX PC. I also said that I would never fill mine up. Even put compression software on there about a year later to try to keep it alive. Finally replaced it with a 30MB card drive.

Something to do with the MWAVE card that was both a dial-up modem and a sound card.

I can't recall, think it was mostly just to see what it looks like inside when we got our first computer when I was a kid. I then put the cover back on before my parents get home because I did not want to get in trouble. :p

NCR 8088...added more RAM. That was sometime in the mid-to-late 80's.

I added a 3dfx graphics card to my PC so I could play quakeworld with some decent FPS.

Building our first computer. My Dad bought the parts and showed me how to slap it together. 386DX40. That was a great machine. The Antec desktop AT case stayed with us from 1990 or so until our first ATX build.

Install a graphics card. Unfortunately it was an AGP card and we only had a PCI slot. I thought I had an AGP port because Windows told me I had an AGP graphics adapter. Little did I know that it was on board AGP and not a dedicated slot. Needless to say, mission failed.

Before that a long time ago it was to install a 4x CD-ROM drive, which, at that time was revolutionary.
