yahoo was the first search engine that really gained a dominant position and sort of consolidated the web. Other than that, AOL homepage introduced alot of people to email, weather, stocks, etc...
 
really the one site that has made the internet accessible to most people has been aol.
as sad as that is aol has been a mjor part in making something so cmplex easy for even old ladies.
