Sorry if this seems like it shouldn't go here, but I figured with the popularity of the webcam thread a few weeks back that someone could make a recommendation.

I have to buy a webcam for the girlfriend (we're each in college, about 2 hours away from each other). Quality is pretty important as I'd like a solid framerate.

The best webcam roundup I can find is over a year old on CNet... so... can ATOT help?

Thanks for your time,

Intel PC Pro.

I got it from Dell a few months ago on that fantastic deal. $30 with a $30 mail in rebate. I think it usually goes for $60-$90. Great picture quality for a webcam. In fact I'm watching my dog at home on it right now.

I had an intel pocket pc cam that I got rid of when I got my Kodak DC240, I think I'm going to get another one of them though as they are great as web cams.

So the Intel cameras are popular so far, the streaming quality is solid? I know I can get about 20 fps at 320 x 240 with my old IBM PC Camera Pro Max which are no longer in production.

Are there any USB 2.0 cams being made? Perhaps they would be better quality.

only the intel deluxe and pro are good. the pocket pc is good, but not as good as the other two. and the intel easy pc camera isnt that good, according to reviews ive read.

is the streaming quality solid? well, its solid for me from time to time. it should depend on ur connection.

The reason I asked was because I got an old Logitech Quickcam for my parent's computer that came with our DSL connection which doesn't capture at a decent rate. I suppose my question shouldn't have been about the framerate as much as the capture rate. The rest is up to the connection, I understand.

I have the Kodak DVC325, and I like it a lot. Good picture for a webcam.

I've heard people like the Intel cams too. They are going to stop making them, but I think there are xp drivers so it should be ok for a while.

Compgeeks has a refurb for $24...

Most of my clients have the intel PC Pro and they seem to like it.My only issue with it is that skin tones really look off particularly in the night time light at most people's computers desks, even with adjustments.

Some USB webcam rebranded as a "Spectre SVC1000". It was very cheap, and it works great. :)
