What we do if gas was $8 to $10/gallon?

I didn't think this would fit in P&N since I want to discuss how we would survive if gas prices reach this level.

So I saw this article on Drudge:

http://www.nysun.com/news/busi...-may-soon-cost-sawbuck

After reading this, it really got me thinking. If somehow gas prices reached over $200 a barrel, how would the common man/woman survive? For example, let's say gas prices are at $8 a gallon. I drive a Mazda 3, and it takes about 12 to 13 gallons to fill up. It would cost around $100 for a fill up, which is crazy to think about it. To go visit my folks, which is about 300 miles each way, It would cost me over $200 dollars round trip.

Now my wife and I aren't scrapping at the bottom of the barrel, but this would really affect us. She drives a Ford Escape, so her gas bill would be even higher. Also, I would think on how this would affect jobs. Would this force employers to really let people to start telecommuting a lot more?

I understand that in bigger cities you probably won't need to drive any more. I'm in the process of moving from Orlando to Tallahassee, and I'm still gonna drive around 8 miles each way to work. We have to drive to go anywhere, we just can't walk.

Discuss. Hopefully this isn't a repost, I searched.

Build better public transport like we should've done decades ago. People living in cities should not need cars but in many American cities you need a car.

Seriously, I cannot even fathom how this would affect a family of four who are living paycheck to paycheck (even though they probably put themselves into a lot of debt). It would be crazy.

Well it would depend on the price of other energy sources. If the price of electricity did not go up, I would buy an electric car.

Those that can continue affording gas, will just buy it and deal with it. Those that can't, will have to find other way of getting around. We might hit this prices in 1-2 year from now.

If gas goes that high, groceries, air fare, utilities (they have to pay for gas for their equipment too) and just about anything else that requires fuel to be delivered to you will have a far less transparent price.

You get double dinged. One at the pump and a second time at the checkout counter/mailbox.

Some brainiac will then decide to think a affordable allternative to using f'ing gas!!! And that brainiac will be one of the richest man in the world.

This is of course after our econmy crashes from being so dependent on oil (and investments from large cigarette companys)

Exactly. It's far from just the ding at the pump. Nearly everything will get more expensive. In fact, it's more than double dinged. Raw material producing will be more. Delivering raw goods will be more. Producing and transporting said good will be more. Distributing the goods will be more.......

My house, right next to fabulous public transportation lines, will be worth millions. I'll sell and retire somewhere and never have to work or commute again. Awesome!!!! C'mon, $10/gal gas! ;)

I doubt there be war as JS80 put it, must have seen/heard that on the Liberal media. As gas in a lot of places is already well over the $5 mark and they seem to be doing ok.

If gas got that high then electric cars would look good even at high prices and the ability to go 50 miles. Motorcycles would get more popular.

Cities would offer more public transportation. Here in DC the metro is already talking about how the current system will be at max cap in less then 10 years at current gas prices.

Some bad parts though would be education would be hurt as right now a lot of schools are cutting back just to put fuel in bus's.

People would not see any savings from buying from costco, target, etc... as yea its a $1 cheaper but after gas cost it now is cheaper to buy from smaller local store that is less the half the distance. So distance of travel will start to sway a lot for buying. Or people will put off buying until they really need soemthing and then mark one large drive. So some areas would see more small shops while other it be the other way around depending on the roads and driving ability.

Then prices on EVERYTHING would go up since I don't know of many other options for replacing big rigs right now. I can see trains getting more use after truck hauling prices go up, but they can only get so far.

I will be happy if gas prices will go up, as it's the only thing that will cause people to finally realize how important energy independence is.

I'd be okay with gas, but honestly...

I paid 400 dollars a month this winter to heat my apartment.

If it went that high..I couldn't afford to live in the winter...it'd be 800-1000 dollars a month...who can afford that crap!

I guess I'd just go live in the homeless shelter or something...at least free heat there.

You guys wouldn't support imperialization of the middle east and taking the oil?
