I don't know how the onboard SATA controllers treat it but I can tell you a bunch of SAS or U320 drives of smaller size striped absolutely flies. Good thing we're required to attach our hardware to the table or it would fly away - even in port!
Sure there's a risk if one drops off but it's like racing and if you know the risk, you play safe and protect your assets.

The 150 is the fastest because it has the densest platters (or the same as the 74gb raptor) also It has higher capisitly so it tends to have better seek times for localized data due to the heads having to move less distance vs a drive w/ lower capasity.
just curious, lets say the 150 and the 74 use the same size platters (roughly), wouldnt it be faster for the reading head to read stuff of the 74, because its just one? or is there one reading head per platter?
also, it kinda seems like this is all moot...wouldnt it be faster to find things on a 36 gb platter because there is less stuff?

Ok everyone just STFU.
I'm saddened and profoundly disappointed by people who are even talking about storage here. This was the forums where everyone told me to STFU when I pointed out Seagate 7200.8s were unreliable, even when SR's database pointed them out as teh biggest POSes in the world. Yet people and their fanboism managed to quiet me down.
FIRST OF ALL,
I do have a WD Raptor 74GB ADFD, and I have seen benches and I have run benches against the 150GB drive. The 74gb actually wins CONSISTENTLY in every single benchmark. By a lot? Not by much.
Now both drives (the 150 and the 74) utilize 74GB platters, so THEORETICALLY it should be the same speed right? All your arguments here are theoretically correct. Yet Seagate 7200.8 250gbs were not the fastest drives despite using short-stroked 133gb platters.. the 400gb came out slightly faster.
So instead of telling everyone the 150GB rules all, why don't you all go check out KNOWLEDGEABLE sources like Storage Review where people bench every single damn 7200.10 to bench the noisy ones against the quiet ones, AAC firmware against AAD firmware, shortstroked against non-short stroked, etc...
The 36GB should be JUST AS FAST as the 74gb, but if its a short stroked one, it will be THE FASTEST DRIVE.
There are no shortstroked 36GB ADFDs? Maybe not, but do you really know? Yes it is more expensive to manucature, but what do you think they do with the bad 74GB drives? Toss them? Obviously not... Why do you think we have shortstroked 250GB drives by Seagate and shortstroked 400GB drives? Why do you think AMD X2 3800+s that could have been X2 4400s?

I just tested it to, and the 2.1gig HD on on my win95 box just beat the raptor by %130, I contacted the manufactor and they claimed it was cause they have a voodoo doctor that puts spells on them to increase speed before shipped to customer. It seems like MS Dawn and DeLerium have at least put some thought into what they said. Where is everybody else's benchies? What DeLerium is saying is exactly what I was wondering about to begin with! The 36 GB (ADFD version) Raptor could be the fastest Raptor. Why would WD produce a unique platter just for the new 36 GB version? That would cost them more so it wouldn't really make any sense.

Now it is possible for the 36.7 Gig Raptor to use a 74 Gig drive that is short stroked (Half of the drive is essentially disabled). Which means that it would have the same platter density as the 74Gig which would render it the same speed as the density is the same. This however is VERY unlikely.
The 74 Gig platters are far too expensive for WD to just disable half of it (or use damaged ones). Therefore it is very likely that they use a 36.7 Gig platter. This means that since the physical size of the platter remains unchanged in order to occupy the entire physical dimensions of the platter they density must be lower. This results in slightly slower access times and what not because the drives contents are spaced farther apart.
ARE YOU FOLLOWING THIS AT ALL.
The 150 Gig Raptor is also unlikely to be the fastest. It uses 2x 75 Gig platters to attain its 150 Gig. That means that there is another head reading. So therefore if part of the data is on one platter, and part is on the other platter, it will have to switch heads which will result in it being slower.
Therefore, though marginally, the 74 Gig Raptor should, be the fastest (marginally) of all 3 with the 150Gig most probably beating the 36.7 Gig Raptor out.
Now please end this useless broken record crap and find something else to do.

I do not agree that it would nessesarily be more expensive for them to short stroke the same platter that they use in the other ADFD models.
It could actually be less expensive for them to just make one platter and use it in different ways.

the end result is that you should buy whichever one you need because you will never notice the difference between the speeds in the real world

And yes it would be more expensive to make a 74 Gig platter instead of a 36 Gig platter. You can not agree all you want, but that is fact buddy. (And to further solidfy this, they use the same platter in the new ADFD version that they use in the old version which was a 36.7 Gig platter (seeing as the old version 2 is still produced).
The access times are the same for all of them because it is the Raptor in general that they are defining the specs for. Notice all the weights are the same too which is impossible since the 150Gig has 2x platters.
I dont know why you are so obsessed with this. You have had 20 people tell you the exact same thing. Listen to one of us, if one of us had any doubts than we would run benches, but all of us KNOW which one it is going to be. READ WHAT WE WRITE (And look up the definition of speculation).
I would prefer if you kept my religion out of this. This is ridiculous.
WE ARE NOT SPECULATING ANYMORE. The old generation 2 36.7 Gig Raptor is still in production with 36.7 Gig platters. Therefore since they are still created for that one there is no reason for them to create excess 74 Gig platters which are significantly more expensive.
I said keep my religion out of this I am more than happy to discuss religion for the sake of it. I do not however want you or anyone else praising me or penalizing me for it in a discussion which has absolutely nothing to do with religion!!

And then to put an end to the short stroke idea, I just said that they still make Generation 2 36.7 Gig Raptors which have been reviewed and have been shown to use a single 36.7 Gig platter. Since those drives are still in production it makes no sense for them to use 74 Gig platters when they just use the same platters as another drive.
Finally, regardless of what platter they are all going to be so close to each other you will never be able to tell the difference.

I would add that the question of "what is the fastest hard drive" can all too frequently turn into "to do what?" If you are using a drive for backup, you want a drive with fast write capabilities, since you rarely read a backup disk. For normal C: drive usage you probably want a drive that has a good balance of read and write speeds. For these , I would refer you to the "average random access read test" and the "average random access write test" as well as the "maximum transfer read" and "maximum transfer write" tests. Additionally, if you are a "noise freak", you could check out the 'idle noise" test. If you are a gamer, you would be interested in the comparisons at various games.

I have both 36 & 74 GB raptors. I strongly prefer the 74gb units. While there are differences between the various 150gb units and the 74gb units, they aren't particualrly significant. The biggest change will come from going to the Raptor line in the first place, but the differences between the upper Raptors is not particularly noticable.
The question of 74GB vs 150GB actually can rest on a whole lot of factors, how you are fixed for money, how badly you need the larger capacity, how you use your computer, etc, etc, etc. If money is no object, go with the 150gb unit. It will last you for a longer period of time before you fill it up.
