What wattage PSU?

I'm doing a build around Christmas, and I just wanted a little help figuring which PSU to get. I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong forum.

The specs are:

Asus A8N32-SLI mobo
2x 7800GTX 256mb video cards running in SLI
Athlon64 3200+
2x 1gb DDR400 PC3200 RAM
300gb 7200 RPM HDD - SATA
2x IDE DVDRW/CDRW
Creative SB X-Fi Plat 8
Floppy drive
Fan controller, 4 fans
Chenming server case

What wattage do I need? Any brand recommendations?

Thanks for your help.

I have a Enermax EG565P-VE FMA 535W Power Supply which is certified for SLI operation. It runs quiet and provides plenty of power.

Why in the hell would you even recommend that. That is ludicrous, for the system he is setting up. It probably will have >150 Watt headroom on a 500 Watt PSU at full load. WHy in the hell would he need a KiloWatt??

Seriously people, if you are going to post in someones thread, at least keep the advice in perspective!

i would look for a 500W from antec, enermax, PC power and cooling, seasonic, OCZ

Add Fortron units in there and i agree 100%

thier very reasonably priced, and have mail in rebates now
600w:

500w:

They dont "enable" SLI. They claim support for it which is nothing more than a marketing ploy. I could run SLI (though i dont advise it) on a 350 Watt PSU.

I'd recommend Seasonic from personal experience. And SLI support on a PSU is designated by two factors: 1) having dual 6-pin connectors for the video cards, and 2) having enough juice to support both of those lines. Theoritcally, you could easily make your own by grabbing two molex connector, and soldering in a 6-pin connector as well on a non-SLI PSU.

Why?

A) The OP did not mention anything about the maximum price he can afford.

B) Why not recommend it it? After all it's made by PCP&C.

C) Having too much power would'nt hurt.It even provides the system with more headroom
for future upgrades.

Last, this is only a suggestion and in no way meant to mislead the OP but show possible options currently available.

Well hell in that case, ditch that entire system, pick up phase change cooling a 7800GTX 512... Give me a break, that is a lame excuse!

B) Why not recommend it it? After all it's made by PCP&C

Because maybe it is overkill.
"What PSU do i need for my old AXP system"
"PCP&C!!!!!!"

Recommend things based on their system, their components and your best estimate on their price range. Even with an unlimited price range on the PSU it is a complete waste of money.

C) Having too much power would'nt hurt.It even provides the system with more headroom
for future upgrades.

Yeah too much power can hurt. At that low of a power draw (You will probably use barely a quarter of that capacity) you couldn't get more than 60% efficiency. Not only is that a lot of heat output for nothing, but you are paying the electric bill when you aren't even using 3/4's of the power!

As for future upgrades. I will guarantee you that in the next year we wont see anything that even approaches (aside from Peltier coolers) 1KW. Hell, would be my car that we wont need anything, for a performance and OCing centered system, over 600 Watt for the next year.

Look at what we need right now. On a very high performance system, with SLI you dont even hit 400 Watt!!!

The 1KW, the 850, and the 510 are all a waste for what he has going (nothing on the OP's computer, i am building one similiar). I wouldn't recommend anything over 500 watt, much less a PCP&C 510 (as it is so powerful at that wattage).

Keep things in perspective when you post. If someone is building a SFF Sempron system you dont recommend a PCP&C PSU and a 7800GTX 512...its just not right 😉

Your point is well taken.Let me quote something from my last post.

anything from a reputable company that has about 34amps or more

Except Aspire and Thermaltake and Ultra....

I've used Thermaltake power supplies and they are actually quite good. Very silent and they stay very close to their rated voltage. My personal favorite for power supplies is OCZ.
