Hey all - the wife just reported that we got a high electric bill for December. $325 smackeroos for ~1600kwH used. Will be trying to figure out where the electricity is going, because we are not home all that much and the only thing that uses a lot of juice in the winter is our pellet stove (which draws 100W from the wall pretty much 24/7 - so ~60 kWH/month (2.4 kWH/day * 30 days). We have the highest efficiency heat pump hot water heater on the market (Stiebel Eltron Accelera), but I suspect that might be the culprit. only two other possibilities - electric baseboards in our basement (which are not used often - maybe 30 minutes a day (probably less)), and new radiant in floor heat in our upstairs bath (which is 2W/square foot * 150 sq/feet, but runs very infrequently).

Anyway - what was your electricity usage in December, and what was your location?

1275kWh.

Speaking of which, I received a letter in the mail that they'll be installing smart meters in my neighborhood this month. That will be cool.

My billing is mid-month to mid-month, I only have the bill from Nov 17 to Dec 17 - used 709 KWh and paying .0755/KWh on it, so after fees and taxes around $66 in the Boulder CO area.

Could it be higher for you because previous bills were low estimates and they finally came out to do a corrective reading?

----
But for me, it's unknown because it's an included utility in my apartment.

Too lazy to look up kWh - My bill was ~$65.

It's nice not having to use the AC, it cuts us down from the $150 months of summer... Except mornings like this morning I was freezing balls. You know that game of "The Floor is hot lava" Yeah, this is the real life version mo'fo... except it's the frozen version. Same thing when I get out of the shower....

Grrrrrr.......... I need to program my Heater to come on for 15 minutes in the morning.

So what is your gas bill??

Electric and Gas bill is combined. I paid 104 for "utilities"

Residential Electric
Service Availability Charge - $8.75
Energy Charge 462 kWh x $0.0691 - $31.92
Fuel Adjustment 462 kWh x $0.01076 - $4.97
Regulatory Adj 462 kWh x $0.00936 - $4.32
Total Electric Bill (Non-Taxable) - $49.96

Gas General Service
Service Availability Charge - $9.55
Energy Charge 57 ccf x $0.49 - $27.93
Fuel Adjustment 57 ccf x $0.24099 - $13.74
Total Natural Gas Bill (Non-Taxable) - $51.22

+ A bunch of bullshit charges = ~104

1000sqft apartment, electric everything.
Kept thermostat on 70 most of the time.
Seems pretty high usage to me.
We just moved into a new house recently. It will be good to see the difference.

Meh, our electricity always doubles or triples from November to December, mostly because of Christmas lights, and all the extra cooking/entertaining that we do at the end of the month. It's not as bad as it used to be though - moved to all LED lights which saves a bit.

We have gas heat, and that also went up a bit.

$25 - Electricty
$95 - Gas

Thermostat set to 65. Do to excessive heat loss of the structure my little boiler can only provide about 35 degrees better than outside temp. Nice thing about living in the Southwest is it doesn't matter much.

Do you have tons of Christmas lights? Like, the C9 ones? Those are 7w a pop. I have two strands on my house, that's 350w and they're on all night. If you have tons of lights, it adds up quick.

My December usage was 1100kwh. My October usage was 889kwh for comparison. The furnace blower probably uses a half decent amount of power too so the furnace running more probably makes a decent dent.

Detroit.

December is usually a bit higher for us due to holiday lights, etc. Our heat is gas so no impact there, but our water heater is electric so that ticks up a bit in the winter too.

About ~$200 for gas + electric. Not bad for the area. I keep my heat on 70deg almost 100% of the time. It's on 72 right now.

Other states have way cheaper rates, but I can't complain too much.

~20kWh electricity / week for the last 3 weeks of December.

My average use is about 15kWh electricity / week.

EDIT:
Netherlands.
I pay about 38 Euro a month for gas and electricity. And still i get every year money refunded because of my low energy use.
