What was this cashier thinking....

Ok the order comes to $2.11 I give him a $5 and after he rings it into the register I give him $.11 cents (Which I told him I had before he took the $5).

Now he has to take over a min. to figure out the change. Quick recap $2.11 I gave $5.11 change should be $3, he pulls 2 ones out of the register (wrong at this point but forgivable) and then grabs 2 dimes!!! How the ****** would there be change due when I gave him the $.11

what logic could the cashier POSSIBLY been using?

He saw the two 1s in the eleven cents and figured that it meant two of the smallest coins in his drawer.

Haha.. OMG I remember this happening to me. I believe I was working at Wendys in H.S. (99) and same situation happened to me. I was STUMPED. I was like, what should I give back? So, what I did I was I gave the guy back what he was supposed to get AND the change he gave me after I rang up the bill. He had the weirdest look on his face and walked away. I learned my lesson and never made that mistake again. :)

The correct answer is that making change and doing simple math in one's head is now a lost art in the USA.

Yeah, once when I bought an item for $3.26 or whatever, I gave them a five, a quarter, and a penny. They gave me back the coins, and patiently explained that it was only $3.26, and I had already given them five, so I didn't need to give them any more. Then they made change. *sigh*...

While I never worked a register in my life, I can see how the job might become something you can completely zone out with. Usually you're making change for whole dollars, and when someone throws you a curve-ball with change in there... even with it being something that evens it out, the cashier has to take a step back and actually think about it.

Trick I used to use on cashiers.

Give them a ten and ask for a 10 ones. This confuses them to no end.

Pick up the 10 ones, then put them down saying "nah, 5 dollar bill and 5 ones are fine"

Pick up the 5 bill + the 5 ones, plus your original 10 and just ask for your original 20 back.

Works like a champ. Heck you can make a living on this simple trick alone.

i worked at a deli a few summers back and i always gave change from counting in my head - and some lady thanked me cause she had lost faith in the youth cashiers out there and it was nice to see somebody that could count :) she said the fact that most people relied on the cash register to count for them, and it always throws them off when people change what they give them and that made her sad.

i said well, i am 27 years old and i work at a deli and have no degree, so im not exactly reassurance of the previous generation either, but i have always been able to count in my head.

of course since then i went back to college and am graduating with a bachelors this may, so i feel better about that situation.

We used to go to a bar in college where if you gave this one bartender a $10, she'd give you change for a $20 EVERY time. We used to go to the bank, get a bunch of $10's and then go drink for free plus make money. It was great.

I've seen in happen in college during book buy backs. these were student working. I can't remember the total but I know I wanted whole bills rather than care loose change. the girl looked dumbfounded as to why I am giving her amount necessary to get whole bills. Since I owe them nothing.

I left out the part where you are to count out the ones - this is the key. Like all magic diversion is the key. By now their mind is so fubarred by a change in the routine they're ripe for the taking.

Not that I condone said activity. A good cashier recognizes this trick immediately.

I was very poor and was a cashier. I'd see folks try it on me many times. I decided to reverse the rolls. Amazing how well it works.

That's not a trick. Its a scam, and is stealing. Some guy(he was a known scammer) tried to pull it one me with a hundred-he walked away out some money. You just an ass if you actually did that. Most companies make the cashier pay it back.

This is true. I worked as a cashier at K-mart. My mind would just effectively switch off. When someone needed something out of the ordinary, it was like trying to wake a laptop out of Suspend Mode - sometimes it'd take awhile, and sometimes not everything would come back the first time.

I'm a cashier at a bookstore and honestly, I've done some stupid sh!t. It's pretty rare but whenever I work at night, there is never anyone in after 7:30 or so. It's really easy to just space out and put your mind on autopilot.
