Well, Ferrari said the California is last model that will be offered with a manual. So the California then.

Slotted shift gate and ball shifter is pretty much a requirement in a Ferrari. Last I'm aware of is the 355 and 360 didn't have the paddle shift unless you got the F1 model. Haven't paid attention much since.

That's a shame really. I see so many of these beautiful cars with that stupid flappy paddle gearbox, it just makes me want to cry.

Yeah, the mess that passes for a shifter in cars these days is a joke. I'll be the first to condemn the flappy paddle gearbox in the Lexus IS. I own one, and it is a completely useless gimmick. My wife never uses it. I've used it a few times but it is worse than just leaving it in automatic mode IMO. That sucks too because the car actually has a decent chassis and brakes and with the 3.5l engine it has plenty of power too but it is completely let down by the electronics and that automatic transmission.

That's a completely different animal than the dual clutch paddle shifted transmissions in supercars..near-instantaneous shifting. I love a real manual too, but don't discredit the new stuff! :)

The F430 had a proper manual, the 430 Scuderia was F1 trans only, and the California is going to be the last manual car. The California is quite a bit slower with the manual and has far worse gas mileage too.

Hold on....you're comparing the paddle shifting in your Lexus to a Ferrari?

Dude, Ferrari's have F1 gearboxes, that's why they are paddle shifts.

Lexuses have a regular automatic transmission and stupid little gimmicky shifters on the steering wheels to give 16 year olds hard ons. You may as well have a regular automatic and go from L to 2 to D. They actually request a gear shift through the car's computer, not the same thing at all.

Hope you didn't cry too much about the new Ferraris...

Hold on...I'm not. I was responding to someone who had driven only a Lexus IS and I was agreeing with him that they are crap. My response to his comment and the intent of this thread are worlds apart.

Please don't cry too much about the rest of this thread.

IMO, a transmission like jlee described has just as much disconnection from the driving experience as a normal slushbox failmatic.

About 70% of the F360 sold were F1 transmission. About 99% of the F430 sold were F1 transmission. F1 was an option and added about $10,000 to the purchase price. Blame Ferrari for pushing the technology the last 15 years and the buyers for wanting to pay extra for the F1 trans. If majority of the F360 and 430 buyers had opted for the cheaper standard manual transmission, I'm sure Ferrari would still be offering it. Real buyers voted with their wallet.

And that's just sad IMO...

Why? Who honestly cares? The automated transmissions in the Ferrari's are incredibly good. You'll never be faster in an manual and around a track it will be noticeable. I love manuals, but I'd have a hard time choosing between a Ferrari F1 gearbox and a 6spd.

LOL at people who think the sequential shift boxes and semi automatic boxes have anything in common with automatic boxes.

SpeedStick? maybe SportSlap? like i said, i haven't driven the ferrari, porsche, et cetera so in the interest of fairness somebody should lend me theirs for a weekend before i form an opinion.

Wait a minute, hold on a minute... I SAID HOLD THE F#%K ON!!!

You guys are crying about a car that you'll never be able to buy? That's laughable.

WTF is "proper"? If it's manual, it's fuking manual; if it's a MUCH more technologically advanced form of shifting that allows the driver to concentrate on the road and DRIVE the fuscking machine to it's limit, then so be it. It's called technology, deal with it. It's better, it's faster, it's more efficient. WTF is not "proper" about it? Not allowing you to fuss around with it so you can be "one with the car"?

Seriously, quit sounding like most of you are hard core old school racing drivers and need to refers to the "old days" to sound cool. It's garbage.

Alright, now I need a proper drink.

a proper semi-automatic transmission is a sequential 6 or 7 speed box with clutchless shifting, and i would be all over it. what is available on cars under $100,000 is an automatic transmission equipped with up and down buttons, and it sucks.

Except for all the cars where it isn't. VAG dual clutch, evo, GTR, etc.

I love the paddles on my Outback and Fit, and won't buy an auto car without them from now on. Though all I really use them for is compression braking.

E46 M3 SMG isn't even 1/4th of $100G and you get a real manual trans with hydraulics and solenoids connected to the shift forks and clutch system. (eg: no planetary gears or torque converter).
