Lots of things might have been technically cool, but didn't make the cut in the mass market real life world. What's the most bizarre flash-in-the-pan item you can think of?

Ron Popeil's dehydrated water maker. It would be awesome to have fresh, dehydrated water everyday, but what would you add to rehydrate it?

The Video Disc.

Before the LaserDisc

And yes we had one of these in the house. I remember watching Clint Eastwoods Anyway Which Way But Loose on that blasted machine.

Whoa, that's what I was thinking about when I put LaserDisc! I meant to say Video Disc - yup, not a big success.

and can compete with DVD.

too bad it didn't take off - but it did give us the biggest consumer device ever seen (the DVD player) we know today.

Too many to choose from. The elcassette should certainly be on the list, though I don't have any of those. I do have a couple of DCC tape decks (anybody remember those?) and three portable CD-I players (very much like modern handheld DVD players, but much clunkier and more expensive). Don't have any CD-I disks, however.

I used to have some Videotrax backup systems. It was really quite clever: it modulated the data onto a video signal and let you use a VCR as an amazingly cheap (especially for the time) streaming backup system. Never caught on that much, but the manufacturer even tried the experiment of renting time on cable TV channels to distribute software and other material with this system.

What was the idea where they printed off a program in magazines so it sort of looked like barcodes. Then you scanned it in and ran it though a program which converted it into binary, then bingo you had the original program saved.

DAT was deliberately and methodically killed as a consumer format, but it's been quite successful as a professional audio format and as a computer backup format. At modest budget levels, it's still pretty much the standard for location sound.
